The End of Cady's Falls
Spring 2026
After 45 years of gardening and plant propagating at Cady's Falls, our life there has come to an end. Over the decades living in the Lamoille flood plain we had been plagued by high water. The frequency and the intensity of the flooding increased steadily, culminating in the gutting of the house in 1995 and again in 2023. Approaching our eighties, the time was ripe to move on and, last November, the Vt Fish and Wildlife Dept purchased our property in its entirety. The old farm house and the monumental post and beam barn have now been taken down and no one will ever inhabit that low lying land in the future. The Lamoille River can flow freely across the floodplain.
In August we moved to a hilly, half-wooded property in Maple Corner, Calais, Vt. We have settled in nicely over the winter and are contemplating restrained, woodland plantings among the limestone outcrops.
The land at Cady's Fall is now in the public domain. However, by contract with the State of VT, we will retain ownership of the plant collections until November 2028. At the moment, the gardens remain largely intact and will be maintained on a minimal level as we gradually move plants to our new garden, to various public institutions and to a few select nurseries in New England where they will be available to the public.
The old Cady's Falls Nursery website has been taken down and this website will soon disappear as well. Our email address will remain the same and we welcome communications from old plant friends and customers.
Best to all from Maple Corner, Calais, Vermont.
